About Rusted Grain

Rusted Grain is a collaboration of independent woodworkers committed to education and using the “waste” of our city as an invaluable materials resource. Working closely with the Green Demolition Team of ReUse Action and other suppliers, we receive salvaged wood from deconstructed Buffalo area homes and build small products as well as teach people how to build their own products and furniture. We also source hardwoods from tree removal services taking down damaged or unwanted trees.

We believe learning and sharing is the most important part of what we do. As part of our residence at and collaboration with The Foundry, our woodworkers offer classes and workshops.

Our by-donation workshops are every third Monday of the month (5:30pm to 8:00pm). No prior registration is necessary, and there’s no fee to attend, however we do ask for donations to cover the cost of materials you take home with you ($10-$15).

Past workshops have included:

  • shelving
  • coat racks
  • kitchen utensils
  • picture frames

Two-Day Classes

We offer longer skill development classes once every three or four months. These classes are usually scheduled on the weekends and cost money. We find talented woodworkers, invite them to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of the trade, and you walk out with the efforts of your labor! Check out The Foundry’s calendar for our next round of two-day classes.

One-On-One Sessions

We realize your project may be specific and would take more than a 3-hour workshop to build. If you want to build something yourself with guidance from our staff, we offer one-on-one sessions. We charge $30/hr plus materials cost if you use wood from our shop. Please email us at info {at} rustedgrain(.)com if you’re interested
